Finding Shouko
Finding Shouko is a visual novel about love, friendship, hardship, and tragedy. Three friends embark on a journey to save their friend, Shouko, who went missing during a raid on their village during the Edo period of Japanese history. But not all is at it seems; demons are watching, human and otherwise. Sinister forces are watching their every move with calculating precision, unbeknownst to the three friends.
In this first issue you must decide how to start your journey. Do you leave your friends to protect the village and pursue Shouko on your own? Or do you sacrifice the safety of the village and take them with you? In this first release you will have six decisions to make. Each have their own ramifications and will shape how your friends look at you, and how you look at yourself. In this world your decisions carry weight, but you have to ask: how much of destiny will get in your way?
You decide.

About Finding Shouko
Finding Shouko was created as part of my masters degree and was recently submitted, marking the end of my degree! So please enjoy and any comments are welcome. If you're interested in Android app development send me a message and I'll be happy to give some advice and a couple of links to online haunts to seek more advanced advice.
Finding Shouko was produced from May 2013 to September 2013. During this period I learnt to paint and sketch digitally, alongside learning how to make Android applications. It wasn't easy, but I'm supremely happy I did it all. Learning these skills was difficult, but that made it all the more worthwhile. I think learning technical skills with the goal of application to a project really makes them tight, because you've got to learn and learn fast - especially when you've got a deadline. I should also say that these skills weren't mandatory to learn either, they were relatively outside my degree but I managed to convince my tutors to let me do this and really showcase something unique and new to the department. 9 months later it's all turned out fine, so good news all round!
Installation instructions (pretty straight forward):
1. Have an Android phone
2. Download the file in this journal titled 'Finding Shouko.apk'
3. Connect your phone via usb to your pc and upload the app (you may need to enable debugging via settings)
4. Start playing!
If you have an older phone there may be some issues, mostly due to the small screen size; but they're not game breaking. If you have a medium to large screen on your phone it'll run perfectly!
Can you become friends with fictional characters?
This is something that has always played on my mind: can you become friends with fictional characters? It's a rather taboo subject, and one that raises immediate questions of morality, reality, and purpose. But as the world becomes increasingly connected - and seemingly more disconnected overall - it's something worth thinking about. Do the experiences you have with fictional characters become your own or are they shared? Do they hold any real significance or is it something to shy away from in the goal to make 'real' friends?
Often when you find something you connect with on a deep and personal level it becomes 'yours'. You make the associa
Why 'Shingeki no Kyojin' is a Terrible Anime
Having been on the receiving end of endless Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) hype I eventually decided to watch it. I'm fairly open-minded when it comes to anime - I have literally given everything a go from: mecha, romance, drama, slice of life, action, adventure, comedy, harem, psychological, dystopian, fantasy, and sci-fi. So I consider myself 'well-watched' and a varied viewer.
I first started watching anime in August 2012 when I decided I would finally get closure on Cardcaptors as the show was cancelled during its run in the UK. From there I went on to watch Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles and later Angel Beats. These three really go
The Link Between Music and Art
In our current age you'll find few people that work without music, or rarely listen to it. Music has become deeply ingrained in our culture for thousands of years and there is no sign of it stopping soon. Walking down your average city street you'll see a large proportion of people with the tell-tale white earphones, and even those without them are probably wishing they had them. Music, much like art, is a strange cultural beast. It is infinitely individual and infinitely communal. Art and music simply make life better. They allow us to express whatever we desire, and we have the ability to choose to keep those designs to ourselves or to shar
Road to Japan: Basic Japanese and Pronunciation
Welcome to journal two of my Road to Japan series! A collection of journals that track my learning of Japanese and a few general things I have to say about Japan, and about how I'm getting there and why. If you missed the last journal you can read it here, though i'll give you a quick brief overview: I'm moving to Japan around the time of April to teach English as a assistant language teacher. I want to move to Japan because I think it's a great country and I hope to have an amazing experience. With the introduction out of the way, let's get down to learning some Japanese!

Let's start nice and simple. Japanese has 5 stan
